Genetics

Two mutant mouse lines have been generated- a straight knockout null allele [1], and an CRE-loxP inducible null allele[2]. Both mutations target the same region of the gene for deletion, and both eliminate the ARNTL protein.

These null mutations of ARNTL completely disrupt all known circadian rhythms- from behavior to gene expression. This is the only current example of a single-gene mutation that completely abolishes circadian rhythms of behavior.
